Carlisle appoint Hughes' successor
Carlisle have moved swiftly to appoint a new head coach after the departure of Mark Hughes earlier today.
Rob Elliot has signed a rolling contract at Brunton Park and will start work on Friday.
The 40-year-old former Newcastle and Charlton goalkeeper had two spells in charge of Gateshead either side of a 33-game spell at Crawley.
Sarmiento to sign for Boro while six players released
Middlesbrough have released their retained list following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.
Jeremy Sarmiento's loan from Brighton will become permanent when the transfer window opens next month, while Alan Browne, Matt Targett and Joe Wildsmith will all return to their parent clubs.
Dan Barlaser, Marcus Forss, Alex Gilbert, Darragh Lenihan, Jon McLaughlin and Sammy Silvera will leave when their contracts expire at the end of June.
Meanwhile, the club say they are in discussions with Dael Fry over a new contract.

Fonte announces retirement at 42
Former Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham defender Jose Fonte has announced his retirement at the age of 42.
Fonte played almost 300 times across eight seasons for Saints, helping them to promotion from League One and the Championship.
The 50-time Portugal international finished up his playing career with two seasons at Primeira Liga side Casa Pia.

Bayer Leverkusen are in direct negotiations with Andoni Iraola over becoming their head coach, according to Sky in Germany.
Iraola has interest from AC Milan and Crystal Palace - but as it stands it does not look like he be taking over at either of those clubs.
Sky in Germany are reporting that Leverkusen are hoping to get Iraola's commitment quickly amid that rival interest.
Leverkusen had been considering Filipe Luis - the former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid full-back - but that deal is off.
Reports say he is set to take over at Monaco.
Abderdeen to sign Briedl
Aberdeen have announced that defensive midfielder Alexander Briedl will join the club this summer.
The former Austria Under-21 international will officially sign a two-year contract when his current deal expires, subject to international clearance and a UK visa.
The 24-year-old came through the youth system at FC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria before beginning his professional career with FC Leifering and then SV Horn. He then continued to develop his game at senior level at Blau-Weiss Linz after a move in 2020

York reject third Hearts offer for Fagan-Walcott

York City have rejected a third bid from Hearts for Malachi Fagan-Walcott.
Your Site News understands that Hearts have had bids in the region of 500,000 plus add-ons rejected by the League Two side.
The 24-year-old centre back came through the Tottenham Hotspur youth team. He had a spell at Cardiff between 2023 and 2025. He moved to York City last summer, with the club playing non-league football.
Fagan-Walcott featured 36 times for York as they secured promotion to League Two on the final day, scoring eight goals. He has also represented England at youth level.
Carlisle confirm Hughes departure as head coach
Carlisle have confimed that they have reached a mutual agreement for Mark Hughes to leave his role as head coach.
Hughes, who played for the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and Chelsea in his playing career, took over at the club in February 2025 and was unable to keep them in the Football League as they were relegated.
Hughes failed to get Carlisle promoted back to League Two at the first time of asking, with the side finishing third in the National League before losing in the semi-final of the play-offs to Boreham Wood.
Charlton offer Dykes long-term deal

Charlton Athletic have offered striker Lyndon Dykes a long-term contract to extend his stay at the club.
The Scotland international joined in January on a deal until the end of the season - with six goal contributions for the Championship side last term.
Charlton now want the 30-year-old to sign permanently - with a long-term contract offer on the table.
But they face competition from Millwall and Leicester City, who have made enquiries.
